At the March 6, 2018 ASG Senate meeting, the assembled Senators voted for their next Chair of Senate. The Chair of Senate is unique among the ASG executive offices because the chairperson is elected by the current Senators to lead the body the next year. This year saw two candidates for the 2018-2019 Chair of Senate: Clay Smith, a two-term Senator from the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural Food & Life Sciences, and Colman Betler, the current Chair of Senate who had served as a Senator in the 2016-2017 academic year.
The candidates appear listed in the order that they appeared on the Senate meeting agenda for their candidate speeches. Forty-nine ballots were cast in this election, making the simple majority needed to win the election twenty-five votes. The votes were first counted by Office of Student Activities Assistant Director Michael McAllister. They were next counted by ASG Chief Justice Andrew Hansen. Lastly, the current Chair of Senate counted the votes since the chairperson presides over votes taken within the Senate. All three vote counts matched when compared. The current Senators were notified of the results of this election Tuesday night.
