Senate

Senate is a directly elected group of students representing every college on campus that advocates to administrators for student needs as well as creates the governing structures of ASG. Each Senator is empowered to work on behalf of students however they see fit under our pillars of Legislate, Advocate, and Serve. There are 51 Senators, 50 of which are elected by their college each spring, representing the 27,000 undergraduates at the University of Arkansas. The Chair of Senate is elected in the previous school year and constitutes the 51st seat. In the past, Senators have advocated for student needs in many different ways. Senators have drafted resolutions supporting measures such as increasing the lighting of campus crosswalks, increasing dietary inclusivity, lowering the University’s carbon footprint, and  many others, all of which can be found on our legislation page. Senate allocates a legislative budget of approximately $10,000 towards various projects to improve campus for students. Senate meets every Tuesday night at 6:30 pm in the Graduate Education Building Auditorium. All Senate meetings are public; students and members of the community are encouraged to attend; there is time allotted for your comments. We would love to meet you and hear your thoughts!

i

Legislate

Senators work together to draft formal proposals to solve issues in campus life. These proposals can take the form of Bills, which allocate Senate’s budget or create a new ASG structure, Resolutions, which express the support of the student body for a cause or solution to an issue, or Proclamations, which offer the appreciation of the students to members of our community who have gone above and beyond in their service to the community.

Advocate

Senators also develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators in departments throughout campus. Senators utilize these relationships to offer feedback on issues facing the student body and achieve policy outcomes for students without the need for legislation.

Serve

Senators regularly engage with volunteer opportunities to serve their campus directly, either by serving alongside their fellow ASG agents at ASG events or by giving their time to other service opportunities in the broader campus and Fayetteville community.

Logan Martin

Chair of Senate

Logan is a senior from Bentonville, AR majoring in Political Science and Philosophy with a minor in Legal Studies. He has been involved with ASG since his freshmen year when he served as a member of Freshmen Leadership Forum. Through FLF, Logan fell in love with Senate and its work, and ran for a seat in the Spring of his freshmen year. Prior to being elected Chair, Logan was elected to two terms representing the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. In his first term, Logan served as Chair of the Internal Affairs Committee and worked on campus safety measures such as modernizing “blue light” safety infrastructure and clarifying online safety resources. In his second term, he served as Pro Tempore, where he headed the Senate Research Committee and worked to reform Senate to be more community-oriented through creation of a Senate Programming Committee, as well as introduced a Senate Mentorship Program, and worked with other Senators to bring Ecosia, a carbon-neutral chrome extension, to campus. Outside of school, Logan enjoys playing video games with his friends, watching F1, anime, and spending time at Beaver Lake with his family. If you would like to discuss any campus issues and solutions, or are interested in getting involved with Senate, please reach out!
